Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Following Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Several parts of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended threshold set by the WHO.
Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy standards.
Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that blankets the city as winter approaches.
Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed city administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judges complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several monitoring devices throughout the city showed pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Implications
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Problem
The dangerously high levels of pollution in the capital have continued as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Various Pollution Factors
This crisis in the capital is attributed to a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can result in malignancies.
Air quality crisis is projected to be responsible for 10,000 untimely mortalities per year in the city.
