Were Labour Recognized a Genocide in the Gaza Strip, It Would Be Forced to Admit Its Involvement in It

On Tuesday, an international inquiry determined that the Israeli military has carried out acts of genocide in Palestinian territories. This verdict is unsurprising, given that rarely have nations in history have been this overt about their aims.

Consider these instances: Earlier this year, a top Israeli official stated that “the strip must be entirely destroyed”; a week later, Israel’s leader asserted that Israel is “destroying more and more houses in Gaza,” leaving civilians with no place to go.

Official Position

At the beginning of this month, David Lammy wrote a statement to the head of the international development committee, declaring that “ministers has carefully considered the potential of genocide” and has not determined that Israeli authorities is acting with destructive aims. How can separate organizations reach such different endpoints?

UK authorities avoids making a conclusion on genocide since should it, it would have to face up to its involvement.

Support for Israel

In terms of diplomatic and defense strategy, the UK works in alignment with the United States, Israel’s strongest ally. Britain still furnish Israeli forces with key parts for F-35 jets bombing Palestinian communities.

Aircraft carrying out aerial attacks have been authorized to arrive in the UK. The UK government continues to share intelligence with Israel. Officials conduct constant monitoring operations over the region.

In place of implementing broad penalties, UK officials enable business with Israeli entities worth £6bn a year.

Double Standards

As the nation’s leader – whose extreme comments about broad blame on Palestinians – is granted the privilege of a state trip, many peaceful protesters carrying banners denouncing violence face incarceration as though they are radical elements.

Every action taken against Israel has been performative, meant to quiet appeals for action from the people. Ultimately, most the public feel it’s probable Israel has breached humanitarian standards, a majority backs an weapons ban, only a fifth consider Israel’s operations in Gaza is acceptable, and more than 50% endorse Netanyahu’s arrest for alleged war crimes.

Individual Tragedies

Safety of those living in Gaza are deemed less important than maintaining relations with Israel and, through association, the US. In human terms, this policy unfolds in the most callous of ways.

A Palestinian refugee, a resident of former deputy prime minister, met her on several occasions. She visited his takeaway shop in 2019 and took photos, stating “Palestine must be free”. She took him on a tour of parliament.

Soon after the violence erupting in late 2023, his parent, sibling, relative and two young nieces were died due to an bombing. Attempting to save his wife and daughter – who had been injured in strikes three times – he emailed Rayner twice requesting assistance.

He says he was ignored. Months later, he went to a party gathering where he spoke out, holding images of his dead mother, pleading for a halt in violence and saying passionately, “My relatives were killed in Gaza”.

The unfortunate event was on camera: he was escorted out from the meeting and on to the street. She remained passive, except to say “response, you’ve made your point”. Subsequently unfollowed him on digital channels.

Days later, she was featured by a broadcaster, where the confrontation was described as an example of threats politicians face, comparing it to the killings of politicians. Afterwards, countless of Neder’s family members have been slaughtered that their names take up extensive notes of a journal.

Imagined Scenarios

Imagine if an individual from Israel had been aggressively ejected from the gathering of a leader they had met previously, after clutching pictures of their lost loved ones and pleading for the conflict to cease. Rather than being framed as an example of harassment experienced by politicians, the response would be featured in media outlets and lead news bulletins.

Final Thoughts

Ministers is evading difficult realities. It denies genocide, as acknowledging it would mean accepting their own complicity. Facts, in the end, will emerge.
